Isidore Stanislas HELMAN (Lille 1743 - Paris 1809 or 1806) "Le Marchand de Lunettes" (the glasses merchant) Original etching dated in plate on the bottom right 1776, printed and published by the author at his Paris address on rue des Mathurins, from a painting by Jean Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781) made in 1773 and belonging to the collection of the Duke of Chartres, passionate patron of many artists of the time including Helman himself. Beautiful copy in coeval edition printed on typical eighteenth-century laid paper, trimmed to the imprint of the slab, on average burnished uniformly and with some tiny peels but overall in good general condition. Delightful interior scene with vaguely erotic content, the young merchant of optical instruments is received by the wealthy client who delights in experimenting with all the news that are offered to him, unaware of the gallant deception that takes place behind him. On the precious carpet lie precious monocles, lunettes and a pair of telescopes. Bibliography: Benezit “Dictionnaire des Peintres .."
